Overweight-A Risk Factor For Cancer

Posted on July 10, 2013

It is known through many research studies that being overweight increases the risk of developing diseases.

In  this study, researchers in the United Kingdom studied data from 221 studies  and 250, 000 cancer cases.  It was to determine if a 5kg/m2 increase in body mass index  is a risk factor f0r cancer.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is  used to assess a person’s weight health,  It uses height and weight to compare the ratio of body fat to total  body mass.

This is the result of the study:

The risk of oesaphageal adenocarcinoma rose  by 59%

-Thyroid Cancer by 33%

-Colon and kidney cancer by 24%

-Endometrial cancer rose by 59%

-Gall bladder cancer by 59%

-Kidney cancer by 34%

-Oesaphageal adenocarcinoma  by 51%

Overweight/obesity is a risk factor for other non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, respiratory problems, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) and more.

Obesity in pregnancy is a health risk to both mother and baby.  These are good health reasons to prevent obesity or to reduce it.  Our health program prepares consumers to eliminate overweight, control weight gain and prevent diseases like cancer.
