Researchers found that calorie restriction was far better for losing weight than protein and carbohydrate intake.
In a randomized study of 300 overweight women and men, the researchers assigned the partcicipants to either a high protein of a high carbohydrate diet for two years. Both diets had similar calorie intake.
The participants were between the ages of 35 and 75 with type 2 diabetes and a body mass index (BMI)of over 27.
They were on this nutritional program for two years.
The result was that there was no difference between the plans, they both yielded positive results.
Researchers concluded that calorie control was far more important than carbohydate or protein intake, and that those planning to lose weight should focus on curbing calories.
