Contagious Virus In Children More Widespread

A recent report shows that researchers need to put more emphasis on a vaccine for the respiratory sunctial virus ( RSV).   RSV is a virus they predicted would affect  2.1 million children under the age of 5.

 Over a four year period the virus was responsible ( in 3 US counties ) for:

  • 18 % of emergency room visits
  • 20% of hospitalizations
  • 15 % of office visits for respiratory illnesses in children under 5

The hospitalization rate was actually 3 times as often as influenza.
